The Performance Pyramid
Gray Cook, a renowned physical therapist and developer of the Functional Movement Screen, describes athletic performance in 3 levels. The base level represents your ability to move through fundamental patterns, the middle tier represents your movement efficiency expressed as power, performance, or fitness, and finally, the top tier represents your sport-specific skill. Being underdeveloped in the "movement" tier will limit your ability to improve at the "performance" and “skill” tiers.
If you have plateaued and you’ve failed to see improvements in your lifts, if you're still unable to perform most group workouts at the prescribed weights, if you're looking to become more well-rounded as an athlete, or if you want to improve your overall performance, then the Functional Movement Screen and the exercise prescriptions that come from it are for you.
